Check Your Pride At The Door
Business leaders are the reason why businesses fail. Here is my example.
But, the question you might ask is, “Why?”
I’m glad you asked.
I meet with business leaders on a regular basis that have been very successful in the past, but with the down turn in the economy, their businesses are really struggling. Sales are down. Revenues are down. Profits are down. Productivity is down.
I am amazed at how many businesses are really having a hard time right now. Especially when my business is up. Business is so great that we just brought on a new employee and are looking for another.
So, how does a business leader ensure the success of the business in any market… whether the market is up or down?
The key is to realize that you aren’t nearly as good as you think. You need to learn and adapt. You need to change with the times. You need to make decisions based on the choices that you have in front of you.
If your business is struggling right now, it is likely because of a business decision that you have made that doesn’t make sense. You may be paying too much for services from your vendors. You may have significant inefficiencies in your business. You may have a flawed business model.
Take a step back and look in the mirror.
If you are honest with yourself, you will likely find that you aren’t doing a very good job running your business. You may need to seek outside help. It may be time to ask a friend for some help. It may be time to hire a consultant or a coach … (as long as you know they are really qualified. If their business is down, maybe they aren’t so good for you).
If you blame the economy on your failing and don’t look at ways that you can help your business grow, you will continue to fail.
If you check your pride at the door and realize that you can improve, you will.

Re: Pride
Corey, interesting thoughts... I think you nailed a very important point - as usual. However, honesty only gets you so far. Committing to your decision is extremely important.
For instance, if you are waiting to pull into on-coming traffic and see your opening. You give your car some gas, but then hesitate because you think you might not have enough time... your hesitation will get you hit. Either commit to going or don't go at all.
Oh, and on your comment on consultants... my only beef is that they are often very high level. Only a few can help you build more detailed plans... those are the keepers. Aside from that, it is interesting that most people depend on consultants to solve their problems, when in fact they simply helping you to hold up the mirror - as you say.
Good piece on honesty, Corey.
